I remember seeing 66-302 shortly after its arrival to MacDill on a flatbed trailer. Stored in Hargar 3 (I think). Looked like a giant model kit awaiting assembly. Never got to see the project completed as I PCS'd to Germany not long afterwards.

I reconstructed the remains of 66-302, flown by BG Swalm as a Solo aircraft while a 2LT at 56 TFW, under Col C. Cunningham. It was in various pieces at Hill AFB, Utah, and shipped back to MacDill for a Junior Officer Counsel project. The first F4 to be displayed outside of US Strike Command former HQ.

I was a Crew Chief on F4,s at MacDill from 1973 - 1976. Worked the flight line the whole time. Went to college so I could fly for the Air Force. They said I had to much fun in college. Now a check airman for Air Methods and retired with 31 1/2 years of total military service as an old crusty CW4, GO ARMY.

66-0302 at MacDill AFB is a hardwing former USAF Thunderbirds airplane during the Team\\\'s 69-73 F-4E era. 66-0302 was the #1 aircraft for 4 seasons...being replaced my 66-0377 in the final season (1973) as #1. Tsgt Van Gaines, TSgt Wetherington and TSgt Carl Miller crewed as #1 on the Team. Final year, it was # 5 and crewed by SSgt John Garrard....flown by Capt Kirk Brimmer, Solo! Mike Jacobssen, Crew Chief # 6, 66-0289, 1973.

I have seen the aircraft display at MacDill and it is very nice. On the F-4 on display, they have aircrew names, pilot and weapons systems operator. The pilot's name is a two star general. I'm sure he is otherwise a very deserving fellow. I was stationed at MacDill from 1962-1965 and from 1966-1970 so I have some strong feelings about my fellow fighter pilots who served with me. My point is the pilot's name on the F-4 should be a pilot who gave his life for our freedom. It is the fair thing to do and should be corrected by someone. I am not familiar with the WSO's background and he may be very deserving of being named on the Phantom. Thanks; Ross Peeler

I served at MacDill AFB, 1st Cmbt Spt Grp, from 1970-1973 and worked in the CBPO there; a building that is still used for the same purposes. I remember the F-4's and pilots which flew there during those waning days of the Vietnam Conflict. Funny, at the time there were scads of Iranian pilots on base. You could spot them in their light blue shirts and darker pants. I visited the outdoor aircraft display at MacDill AFB yesterday. Very poignant.
