The General Motors FM-2 was a improved version of the Grumman F4F. A supercharged Wright Cyclone 9 was used to provide better take off and climb power. Designed for escort carriers, the FM-2 operated with the USN and the Royal Navy in the Battle of the Atlantic against U-Boats, in support of amphibious operations, and for training. The last Fleet Air Arm victory over German fighters was by 882 Squadron Wildcats over Bf-109's on 26 March 1945. USN FM-2's operated as late as October 1945 aboard CVE's. Post war, a few were converted to crop dusters. Nineteen were registered in the U.S. in 1990.

The Museum FM-2 was delivered to the Navy from Linden, NJ, in June 1944 and assigned to Carrier Air Service Unit 30. In January 1945 it operated with an operational training unit, but later that year became a training airframe. It was stricken in November 1945. In 1962 it was reassembled from parts and was registered as N-7906C. It was reregistered N-47201 in 1977. After service with numerous civil owners in the U.S. and U.K., it came to Planes of Fame in 1986.
