44-77214 I was the radio operator on 44-77214 from December 1954 until June 1956. Stationed at Northolt near South Ruislip, Headquarters, 3rd Air Force. We were the aircraft for gen Wilson, Commander, 3rd Air Force and Ambassador Aldridge, the ambassador to England. Made almost daily px runs to Wiesbaden and Rhine Main. When you are a radio operator, 77214 is not a serial number, it is your name and you don't forget even when you are 77.

44-77214 was a VC-47D assigned to the 513th at Mildenhall England in 1969. The aircraft was well apportioned with a comfortable interior.

The C-47 Chattanooga Choo-Choo at Charleston AFB is a replica of the plane flown by my father-in-law, William T. Clark, Jr., on D-Day to pull gliders over France. In the years since its dedication, our family has made several trips to Charleston to see it. Sadly, Col. Clark died recently. We look forward to another trip to visit his plane with the newest great-grandchildren.

I FERRIED THE VC-47 51116 BACK IN 1972 WITH ALMOST THE SAME ROUTE AS THE PREVIOUS WRITER, EXCEPT WE ENTERED THE U.S. AT WATERTOWN NY. THEN WE RONed AT ALTUS BECAUSE THE PILOT, COL JAMES NEWTON WAS TO BE ASSIGNED THERE UPON ROTATION FOMM RHEIN MAIN. THE TRIP TOOK 46HRS AND I INSTALLED FIVE GALLON OF OIL AT THE GOOSE. OTHER WISE THERE WAS 0 DEFECTS. THE BIRD ONLY HAD 5,000 HRS ON THE AIRFRAME. IF THEY SOLD IT FROM THE BONE YARD, SOMEONE GOT A REAL BUY.

I WAS THE CREW CHIEF ON6671 A RHEIN MAIN AFTER HAVING PICKED THE BIRD UP IN LISBON SOMETIME AROUND 1971. IT WAS JUST COMING OUT OF THE DEPOT AND I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. OH,BY THE WAY,IT IS NOT A VC, IT IS A PLAIN CARGO BIRD. COL HEATH, I FORGOT HIS FIRST NAME FLEW IT BACK TO RHEIN MAIN. AFTER ARRIVAL WE. RECIEVED A REAL VC MODEL AN I HAD TO TRADE 6671 FOR 51116 BECAUSE THE A1C WHO I TRADED WITH WAS A SLOB AND THE BOSS DID NOT WANT HIM TO HAVE THE VC. IT WAS NICE TO SEE THE OLD BIRD.

This airplane is my favorite for many reasons. I joined the Air Force right after high school in 1997. I became a loadmaster and got an assignment at Charleston AFB, SC on the C-17 GlobemasterIII. After 9 months of loadmaster training I finally got to Charleston and the first thing I remember is seeing this C-47 on display.

Not only is this "the best aircraft of all time", but it is named after the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Chattanooga, Tennessee is my home town. So when I saw this airplane for the first time it made me really feel at home.

I spent 6 years in Charleston and now over 2 years as a loadmaster instructor at Altus AFB, Oklahoma. I am doing a paper for Embry Riddle and that's how I found this web page. Thanks for the pictures and information.

Delivered this C-47D to Kelly AFB for inclusion into the museum in 1973. It was assigned to Rhine-Main AB, Frankfurt, Germany (FRG) at the time and flew regular support flights in NATO Europe including courier runs to Oslo & Bodo, Norway, Stockholm, Sweeden, and Copenhagen, Denmark as well as flying the, still active, corridors into and out of Berlin Tempelhof airport.

We flew from Frankfurt to Lossiemouth, Scotland then Keflavick, Iceland, Sondestrom, Greenland and then Goose Bay, Nfld., Griffith AFB in Rome, NY, Barksdale AFB, LA and then on into Kelly. It was quite an adventure but the C-47 took it all in stride.
