Family lore has it that our dad worked as an engine inspector at Sherburn in Elment (and initially in Brough).

I have his testimonial for \"War Production with Humber\", signed by chairman of Rootes Group.

I would like to tie up this info and see whether my father worked on Swordfish.

Any help gratefully acknowledged.

RoC should be 500ft./min loaded with a torp., i.e. 10 minutes to/5,000 ft. Empty weight of 4,700 lb. would be about right, clean takeoff weight is probably about that given, but MTOW with a torp and max. fuel is 9,250 lb.

Oh, the stub on either side of the rear cockpit is a compass mount.

You may wish to recheck the specifications listed on this website. I think the climb rate noted of 5000ft/min is optimistic.

Hello and how about a question? On some Swordfishes, to the right and left of the navigator/obsderver and the telegraphist/air gunner, there are what appear to be short, vertical, slotted stubs. I have never seen them being used for anything and I would love to know what their function is. Any ideas?
Thanks
PS There is a good picture on page 11 of Fairey Swordfish in Action.

Hello, I was on Fairey Swordfish being made at Sherburn in Elmet from the day the factory opened July 1940 until November 1945 in the planning dept/drawing office and responsible for the incorporation of air ministry modifications on the production line. Went up several times on flights with the test pilot H.P.Wilson. Afterwards transferred to the main Blackburn factory at Brough, near Hull where I was in the Jig & Tool D.O. My last design was the mainplane assembly jigs for the Blackburn Firebrand. If you can give me the serial number of the plane at Ottawa I will see if I have any records of it.
