1955-56. 54th ARS Goose Bay, Labrador. I was a radio operator. Coming out of school at keesler, AB and ariving at goose bay, I thought this SA-16 was the ugliest AC I had ever seen and did not want to ride in this. Well, I got to love this AC. We would fly in weather that none other could get off the ground just to get in our time for flight pay. Did not know if we could land sometimes. I would enjoy contacts from others in any capacity on the SA-16. Had some scary flights. I had a friend in my unit also a radio op. last name Star. I will 71 Nov.18, 07 tomorrow but most memories are still stong .

Regarding Walter S Burgeson's post...Can you provide any more details about the accident you described? If you wouldn't mind sending me a copy of the photo, I might be able to help ID the airplane.

Thanks

I was in the 56th Air Rescue Squadron at Sidi Slimane AFB in French Morocco from Nov. 55 to Dec. 56. I was in radar and radio maint. I liked working on the SA-16, and the H-19 helicopters. It was good to work with a great bunch of guys, working to save lives.I remember the Arabs tried to attack out base on New Years eve at the end of 1955. They broke through the security fence about 3 in the morning and tried to get into our ammunition dump. Guess they thought we would all be drunk, and we were, but about 2000 of us went out on perimeter defence, with our rifles, helmets and 100 rounds of live ammunition. We also had 300 Combat Air Police(exinfantrymen) there and they captured them. We only got to town maybe once a month, because of the war between the Arabs and the french, but we sure had a ball when we did, in Port Lyautey usely, sometimes Casablanca or Tangiers. We were all young warriors then, living in plywood huts, riding around on our motorcycles, and raising hell! Sure would like to go back.

I was aboard, as a crewman, SA16a 17149 when it crashed in
Tunisia on June 9th 1953. The pilot was a fatality but the rest of us survived. In the years between then and now I haven't been able to find out anything. It seems that that aircraft number didn't exist and the crash with loss of aircraft and life didn't happen either. I did love the Aircraft and would like to find out about the other crewmen.

Ken!
