Matty Laird was my Great Great Uncle and my Great Grandfather (Charles, his brother) worked with Matty in Wichita on the Laird Swallow and in Chicago. With the history your family has with the "Solution", you are probably already aware of the following books, but if not, they have good pictures and a lot of good information on the Solution and other Laird planes: "Shoestrings to the Stars" by Joan Laird Post and "Laird Airplanes: A legacy of Speed" by Edward Phillips. I am looking for a good desk model of the Solution. There are plenty of Super Solutions floating around, but I would love to find a good one of the Solution.

Sincerely,
Will Laird

I am searching for the Laird "Solution" R10538, rebuilt by my father, John Shanks sr. around 1937 in Minneapolis. The aircraft was rebuild from parts of Charles(Speed) Holmans acft R10538 & parts from Jimmy Doolittles "Super Solution" R12048. It had a unique hand painted finish at this time, and many unique design modifications, such as a boiler plate fire wall, galvenized cowling cooling luvers, and veneer panel wing covering. I would very much like an updated color photo of the acft. so that I can show my 86 yr old father. If your display acft is indeed the same acft that my father single handedly rebuilt for Bob McManus & 7up Bottling, I would like to fly him out to take an actual look at the "Solution" once again. I've heard stories of this rebuild, ever since I can remember. I recently was talking to him about it again and decided to do some internet searching which led me to you. Thank You so much.
