There were only TWO of these P2V-3Z "Combat VIP Transport" variants ever built, in 1950 by Lockheed at their Burbank, CA plant. [Issued Bunos 122986 and 122987.] They were also the last two P2V-3s built.

As P2V-3Z crewmember Bob Peckham mentions above, 122986 was used extensively in the Korean War; and was flown by transport squadrons VR-21 ('50-'51) and then VR-23 ('51-'55). She was retired from service in 1955.

Several photos of her exist with both RZ and RK tailcodes shown. Many military, congressional, and other VIPs were flown into and out of "Harm's Way" in this bird.

Very little official history has been written about these missions. In fact, several Distinguished Flying Crosses and Air Medals were awarded to crewmembers who flew this bird into Korea under shall we say, "hairy" missions. Still no written record of their flights are forthcoming . . .

Supposedly, the second plane, 122987, was originally intended for similar missions in the European theater; but I've heard that it was somehow never used for that purpose.

I'm wondering what BuNo 122987 was ever used for. I have only seen pictures of it with NAS Anacostia (Washington, DC) markings on it.

Granted, DC is a pretty tough neighborhood, but hardly bad enough for needing a "Combat VIP Transport" for VIPs.

Can anyone tell me WHO flew her, and WHERE 122987 was flown; and for what PURPOSEs it was flown? And - who, if anyone, other than NAS Anacostia actually "owned" this plane?

I was a Radiuo/Radar crew member on BUNO 122986/P2V3-Z during the Korean War stationed at NAS Atsugi and would appreciate a photo of it if anyone has one. We flew VIP in and out of Korea at the time. The airplane belonged to COMNAVFE.
