As an AW I accumulated 1,000+ hours and 200+ traps on Kitty Hawk and Nimitz in the S-3A with the World Famous and Internationally Travelled Screwbirds of VS-33 between '85 and '90. I loved flying in this aircraft, and would go back in a heartbeat!

Did 17 years on those pigs as an AE. PTA's, Dwells, Top Smash Lights... good times. (But I would love an opportunity to go back to these Hoovers).

Checked into VS-32 10 days prior to the arrival of the S3A's. As a Aviation Storekeeper I can tell you my tour was not all fun, however we had a great squadron and we did have some good times and moments to remember. Who ever mentioned the windscreen issue on the Kennedy deployment would be pleased to know they restocked the bad windscreens and when we were in the North Atlantic in desperate need of one we found all the retrogrades.... I will never forget that night....

Just cruising around the net and found the "old timer's site.
I was also with VS-21 for the first S3-A cruise aboard the USS Kennedy in 1975. It was a great squadron though and the first deployment of the F-14 as well. As the skipper mentioned, the Belknap incident was more than a night to remember.

We made the first deployment of the S-3A with VS-21 on the John F Kennedy to the Med in 1975 AD. We crossed-decked from our home base at NAS North Island in San Diego. She was well suited for carrier ops (once they fixed the windshields) and was fun to fly. During our deployment, the JFK had the infamous "close encounter" with the USS Belknap. God speed and fair winds...

Served in VS-41 and VS-33(Screw-birds) as an AE. It was a joy to work on this aircraft. (Except for replacing Pitch Trim Actuators).

UGLY? It's one of the most beautiful birds in the world. It's not sexy but it is a gracefull lady! If you could buy a surplus one, I'd sell my wife, my kids, my home and all I own to have her!

I was assigned to VS-28 right out of NATTC, Memphis. It took awhile to get used to the look... but I wouldn't trade my experience with it for nothing in the world.

Hey Peterdee...

Answer to your question:

S-3B>>>

Same Crew for the most part as the S-3A

Although, some of us wiley AW's got qualified as TACCO's and thus the SENTAC designation was born.

The "B" was more fun then an inspector gadget type like me could ever hope to have!
