The XJA-1 designation was not associated with the Noorduyn Norseman. Instead it was used for the Atlantic Super Universal, a development of the Fokker transport aircraft designs. A single aircraft was ordered by the US Navy in 1928 for evaluation. It was designated XJA 1 and had serial A8012. It has been suggested the aircraft was cancelled.
This is one of the few times a US Navy designation has been duplicated.
