I was assigned to Detachment 9, 601st Photographic Flight, at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as an aerial combat still photographer from August 1969 to August 1970. My main duty was flying with the 40th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron to document combat rescue missions throughout the Vietnam area of operations. I was doing some background research and I was surprised to see my image of the HH-53 over the setting sun on your page. I thought I had the only copy outside official U.S. Air Force archives.

Great combat rescue helicopter. Flew as a flight engineer from July 1969 to Sept 1980. Assigned to the 40th ARRS at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand Dec 1969 to Dec 1970 and participated in many combat and combat support missions over Laos and western NVN. Our toughest rescue missions were in Mu Gia Pass on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The HH-53 took a lot of battle damage and in most cases brought the aircrews back.
