If you haven't had a chance to the Sky Soldiers you really need to make it to this show. They have one of the most unique demonstration teams in the country. It's a complete Vietnam air cav re-enactment. Yes there is some patriotic music thrown in but most of the audio for the show is actual combat recordings and narration. Rumor is that they will be rolling out a second cobra for the show.

The 2001 show was absolutely great from a visual standpoint. The performers flew their hearts out and put on a terrific show. The problem is that the producers in their infinite wisdom have decided that the airshow has to be some kind of grandiose musical production choreographed to loud rock and roll music. For me, this really detracts from the show. I love music and concerts as much as the next guy, but when I go to an "Airshow" I want to be able to HEAR the planes as well as see them while they are being put through their paces. Music is something that we all have access to and are bombarded by on a daily basis. But how often is it that we have a chance to hear the sweet sound of a P-51, T-28, PT-17, S2E, or (you'r fav plane here) live and in person. Not very often! I would gladly travel the 200 plus miles to see this show again if only they would save the music for pre-show and dead time between acts. Oh well, guess I'll just have to find some music free unchoreographed shows to hit this year.

Don't knock the whole show just because of your opinions on one group or name issue. There will be other performers at the show that put a lot of hard work into their acts. The show is not just the CAF.

I am writing this because of all the long and(to me stupid) comments that were being said about this great event. If you have a problem with the words Dixie, Southern, Confederate, ... then give the South it's Freedom from the fed's, You may have won the war. but we will never forget the true meanings of these words. Go back up North & stay! If you want to see these Aircrafts that made history, then grow up! If you think this will stop Southern Pride & What was taken by the North You are wrong. We live Southern, We breath Southern, We die Southern. This is our great Country (Dixe)& we love it dearly. Ever hear the old saying "shut up & fly"? If you hate the name don't go. but don't wine about it either. It is a World class event that I will be glad to share with my freinds and family. Without the South this country woulds only be half as strong, so befor you "FLY" off at the mouth, Shut up & think, Or better yet Go to where they are more like you. (North). When you think you don't like the name remember we don't care much for you and you'r ways either. But we dont go to you'r land and try to tell you what you should do. The War Between the States, was a War that was one people trying to force others to be a part of what they thought was right for them, (some Freedom). We will always be as we are, Like it, Love it, Or leave it. (Remember there were no Aircraft in the Civil war) So shut up and FLY! Thanks for you'r time.

It appears that many people are still pridefull and misdirected as to the purpose of the CAF and all the hardworking people associated with this group. In this age of political correctness, many excellent organizations are "penalized" by some special interest group and are forced to make costly changes to insure there existance. I too am saddened by the name change but understand the reasons for same. The new name was chosen by the membership and is the best choice of the lot. I am disappointed that so many people would deprive themselves of the chance to attend this airshow over such a change of name. The chance to see these "Warbirds" flying is indescribable. They represent the memory of so many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the most horrendous time in world history and to those who survived yet still are haunted by their experiences. I have attended every one of the airshows since it began and will continue to do so. I challenge any who have the courage to take a ride on the B17 and try to put yourself in the place of the 18 or 19 year old kids while they were freezing and fighting for their lives as 50 caliber bullets were seeking to end their lives. You will come back humbled by the courage of those that fought and died for our freedom. I took that ride and was fortunate to land while in the bombadiers position. I cannot believe the amount of courage it took to do this job while flak and bullets were all around them. It had to be a wonderful change when the P51(the little friends) were on the scene. Please do not dishonor the sacrifice of so many resulting from the actions of small minded people in this age of "political" sensitivity. I am a member of the CAF and am very proud of all they do. They are in part the reason I decided to become a Pilot(just recieved my"wings") and will continue my pursuit of higher ratings and abilities. You haven't lived until you see a sunset in the fall from 4500 feet. I implore everyone to attend the airshow in tribute to all those that make the sacrifice, past and present so we can be free. Understand and enjoy all the work that has made the "Warbirds" fly again. If you have children, do not let this oppurtunity pass to experience this great show and make sure they understand what it represents. If you can, please consider joining the CAF and help "keep em flying" for there is no better sight than to see the B17, B25, AT6, P51, F4U Corsair(my Favorite) in formation. Last note, if anyone from the Airshow committee sees this, please consider the missing man formation at the conclusion of the show. It is a very profound statement of the sacrifices made on our behalf and never fails to move me. It also would be fitting after the events of Sept. 11.

confederate Con*fed"er*ate, a. [L. confoederatus, p. p. of confoederare to join by a league; con- + foederare to establish by treaty or league, fr. foedus league, compact. See Federal.] 1. United in a league; allied by treaty; engaged in a confederacy; banded together; allied. Is it possible that a group of people decided to band together out of their love for aviation to preserve the aircraft and history of the people who have served in the Armed Forces. The organization that evolved allows future generations to experience first hand these wonderful machines of days past and to learn of the accomplishments and sacrifices of their own grandparents, great grandparents and others just like them. Is it at all possible that no malice or ill intent was meant by the selection of a name. The name of the local chapter, The Dixie Wing, is very approriate. Maybe some people would be happy if words like south, dixie, and confederate were from the English language. A lot of people would be better off directing their attention to some of the real problems in the world today instead of perceived problems. The people of the CAF and the other groups involved with this airshow have put together a very entertaining and widely varied event. The airshow is also used as an opportunity to raise money for a couple of local childrens charities. It is a shame to see a few people causing so many problems not just for the local airsow but for the entire CAF. I am not pleased by the change of the name of the CAF or of the airshow, but I will still attend the event and I will still take my children so that they have the chance to see these great airplanes in flight and talk to some of the great men and women who built, flew, maintained, and supported them. It won't be long until those remaining few who "were there' will no longer be around to pass on their stories and experiences. Go enjoy the "Wings Over Dixie" airshow or another CAF event in your area. See for yourself what they are about.

Most have missed the whole reason these people put so much care into working and flying these shows. It's not about Dixie or the south. It is about remembering those (world wide) that gave us the right to the life we have. These CAF shows across the country also gives school, church and other clubes the chance to make money to support much needed local projects. The Peachtree City show is one of the better small shows I have seen and willwill continue to be a class act over the years

Okay, so I'm a Yankee. While I was in the USAF at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, LA, I was uncomfortable of the annual "Holiday in Dixie" air show. I thought, "Hey, we won the war, what's going on?" All these military veterans that are for a constitutional ammendment to prevent the desecration of the American Flag need to set their sites on taking the confederate flag down from its roost. It's not only for PCness, it's justice!

Taking advantage of a bad situation, masters of deceit in journalism or what? I was fascinated with an article, by John Munford, in our local mullet wrapper, “The Peachtree City Citizen Review.” As have many Southern institutions, Peachtree City has been touched by the recent craze in “Name Changing” for the sake of “Political Correctness.” We had an old and prestigious heritage organization locate a branch or wing here in Peachtree City. It was the Confederate Air Force. They are headquartered in Midland, Texas and have existed since shortly after WWII. Their objective is to preserve the memory of the aircraft and airmen from the WWII era. Sounds like a reasonable and honorable objective. They were formed deep in the heart of Texas, hence the name Confederate Air Force. After locating in Peachtree City, they began what has become an annual and popular air show, known as Wings Over Dixie. Not a bad name for an air show right here at the center of air transportation for the Southeastern United States, an area once affectionately know as “Dixie.” An area that has become a center for high technology, transportation, tourism, and political correctness, an “exploding” residential area, highly desired not only by Southern folk with a high tech inclination, not only by International folk seeking opportunities created by the hospitality of the “’96 Olympic Games” but also by our own Northern folk continuing their “Reconstruction” and seeking sources of “Retribution.” One might ask, how John Munford and the mullet wrapper fit into this scenario? Consider these two quotes from his recent article concerning the allocation of some “Government” funds for the upcoming air show. Firstly, “… for the Great Georgia Air Show, formerly known as Wings Over Dixie.” Secondly, “… hosted by the Commemorative Air Force (formerly the Confederate Air Force) and the Peachtree City Kiwanis Club.” John could have maintained the dignity “Formerly” expected of those in his profession but no, that would not be in keeping with the current level of reporting which we have come to expect in recent years. Reporters can no longer simply state the facts of the case and allow the reader to form his or her own opinion but now they must insert some subliminal and or insidious message which either insults the readers intelligence or reflects the media’s position on the subject. He could have dropped the references to the former this or the former that but rather he chose to bleed that turnip for all it could produce. He’s very efficient in maximizing all the benefits available through the use of the “Former” names “Dixie” and “Confederate.” A well respected, landmark institution in this area, WSB Radio, conducted a survey on the use of the “Former” word “Dixie” in the name of the air show. The results were somewhat lopsided, 98% of the respondents had no objection to the use of the word “Dixie.” One might think this survey would have some impact on the name change. It seems there was an employee of the air show who objected to the word “Dixie.” Since we have become a “Politically Correct” country, where the opinion of one overrides the opinion of all others, it is now the Great Georgia Air Show and it will be sponsored by that great heritage preservation organization the “Commemorative Air Force.” I’m sure when these organizations and events change names again, John will be sure to let and know and I’m sure he will remind us of their former names. By the way John, better grab your pen, I already have an opinion about it! James Lee Weaver A Peachtree City resident for over 23 years
