Richard Baricko Wildwood, Missouri | Air Festival taking a Break for 2002
Due to a variety of operational and fiscal problems this year, the producers of the Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival have made the difficult decision to skip a year in order to restructure the organization of the air show and prepare for the 2003 Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival. According to Airport Manager, Bruce Loy, "With 2003 marking the 100th Anniversary of the Wright Brother’s flight, this ‘Centennial of Flight’ promises to provide a fantastic backdrop for the best Air Festival ever!"
The Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival has become a major event in the Cape Girardeau region, showcasing military aviation historical events through fast paced, lifelike demonstrations. Particularly, the Air Festival has provided a fantastic platform to pay tribute to the men and women of our United States armed services who have fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy today.
"While it is our intention, as staff and volunteers of the Air Festival, to continue to bring this great event to the Cape Girardeau community, we have found ourselves in a very challenging, economic position this year", Loy noted. "Starting with the tragic events of September 11, 2001, followed by an economic downturn and the most recent fundraising efforts for severe weather victims, our Air Festival organization was prompted to take a step back and begin working now toward a great show for 2003. In order for us to continue producing a top quality air show, everyone involved agreed that skipping a year was the best answer." Loy also said that he felt skipping a year "assists our generous sponsors in restructuring their budgets for next year."
