During WW II, the 109th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, equipped with P-51s, flew 2,281 missions in support of ground forces. Following the war, both squadrons, the 109th in St. Paul and the 179th in Duluth, flew this aircraft as a tactical fighter in air defense.
