I WAS THE FLIGHT TEST ENGINEER ON THE LAST FLIGHT OF THE BELL XH-12 LAST TEST FLIGHT. WE WERE ATTEMPTING ZERO AIRSPEED ZT 5000 FEET WHEN THE RAIL ROTER DRIVE SHAFT FAILED. WE WENT INTO A VIOLENT SPIN. I FEEL I OWE MY LIFE TO THE SKILL OF MY PIOLET, WAYNE EGGERT. HE WENT INTO AUTOROTATION AND GOT THE NOSE DOWN AND THE SHIP GOT ENOUGH FORWARD SPEED TO WINDMIL INTO CONTROLABL FLIGHT. SAW A BEAUTIFUL GREEN FIELD AND WAYNE LINED UP FOR A NORMAL AUTOROTATIONAL LANDING. BAD LUCK, THE FIELD WAS FOUL OF DRAINAGE DITCHES. LANDING LOOKED AND WAS GOOD UNTIL THE CROSS DITCH. COPTER ROLLED ON RIGHT SID, BLADES SMASHED INTO GROUONG AND ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION CAME FORWARD INTO CABIN. WE WERE NOT HURT. SEATS AND BELTS HELD. ONE ODD THING, A SMALL PIECE OF THE ROTOR HIT AND TURNED OFF ALL THE POWER SWITCHES.
I HAVE A PICTURE OF THE CRASH SITE.
