Corrections to previous: It's good to see the many comments here. I was a radio maintenance guy from 1969 to 1972. This site has really developed since I uploaded the pic of 687 (can't type)taking off and the photo of the patch. I came across the 687 photo in 1993 from a Army troop who was stationed at Wiesbaden after the base became all Army. It's good to find out a name credited in taking the picture. The Army soldier said it was found when Army folk were cleaning out a closet in one of the old 7405th buildings. Anyone remember the fried spam sandwiches at lunch time in the hangar? Who remembers the rotation duty nights "babysitting" the planes? I'll never forget that night when the ground power unit ran out of fuel. And lastly, who still has a coffee mug with the patch? Would someday like to make a reunion...

Yes, Yes, Yes!
Weisbaden 7405th two years 1968 - 1970.
"Big Bertha" in the cafeteria – she would drool on your hamburger as she was putting it on the bun, and then handed it to you as if nothing was wrong!
I was a crew chief on a T-29 until it crashed and burned on the auto bond then they put me on night shift Del Voegele - SSgt and Vince Ferro – TSgt, my boss and I took turns retrieving 688 and 687.
We had some good times in the Nimbus club. Always went to midnight chow. Sleep until noon. “Night shift had it made!” But we were the ones that fixed any red X’s, slashes, fueled them, we did all the flight line maintenance security etc. Does any one remember Lue Massie or Major Scooge?

A friend directed me to this site. What a blast from the past. I hope to make one of the reunions in the future since I just missed the 2007 one.

I was in the 7405th from 68 to 72 as an "SEO." I have an original print of the photo of 687 and I believe that one and the one of 688 were taken around 70 or 71 by Carl "CJ" Tonkin.

Lots of memories, lots of names come to mind. My first flight was on 688 and I was on board 687 when the photo was taken.

Memories include lots of blown engines, engine cowling and doors falling off (thereby bombing East Germany), broken antenna, and more. Some of the names I remember: Col VanOppen, Col Johnson, John Lucas, Palmer Ing, Tony Lacato, Jack McAndrew, Don Cooms, George Coffee, Bill McCullough, and many more. Anybody remember "Big Bertha" in the cafeteria?

I FLEW ON BOTH 22688 AND 22687 FROM 67 TO 71 AS LOADMASTER. 688 DEVELOPED AN ONGOING VIBRATION IN THE TAIL FOR SOME TIME SO MUCH SO THAT WE GOT IN THE HABIT OF WEARING OUR CHUTES REGULARLY. THEY REPLACED THE TAIL BUT IT NEVER QUITE WENT AWAY. MY LAST FLIGHT WITH TH 05TH TO AVIANO, ITALY WE LANDED WITH TWO DEAD ENGINES AND AN UNLOCKED LANDING GEAR. I HAD TO GET UNDER THE PLANE TO PUT IN THE GEAR LOCKS AND WENT OUT THE LOWER AFT DOOR SURROUNDED BY FIRE TRUCKS AND TWO KAMAN DOUBLE ROTOR HELOS WITH FIRE BOTTLES. I REMEBER THINKING IF THE AIRCRAFT COLLAPSED ON ME THAT I'D SURE GO OUT WITH A BANG! WHEN THEY PULLED THE COWLING OFF #2 ENGINE, THE CREW CHIEF HANDED ME SMALL PARTS OF A BLOWN JUG AS A SOUVENIRE OF MY LAST FLIGHT!
