\"Col.\"Chris Ebdon, CAF Pasadena, TX | Steve Andreason's father, LCDR Raymond R Andreason, flew PB-1W BuNo. 77235.
She was built in 1944 by Douglas Aircraft Company at the Long Beach, California plant. She was one of the last 20 B-17s built by Douglas and was delivered on July 12, 1945, to the U.S. Army Air Corps as B-17G-95-DL 44-83872.
On July 21, all 20 were transferred to the U.S. Navy to serve as PB-1W Patrol Bombers, and 44-83872 was assigned the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics Number 77235.
THIS IS THE ONLY PB-1W FLYING TODAY!
The Commemorative Air Forces Gulf Coast Wing maintains and flies the B-17G Flying Fortress named "Texas Raiders", based at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston, Texas
I am a flight engineer on her. 01/24/2008 @ 09:14 [ref: 19417] |
Steve Andreason Fountain Valley, CA | My father (LCDR Raymond R Andreason) flew the PB-1W while stationed at NAS Patuxent River, MD.in 1949. On Aug. 22-26 he flew hurricane chasing and tracking with the PB-1W serial # 77235 and 77240. On Sept 22nd, he was assigned Hurricane tracking with serial #77235. The flight lasted 7 hours.
He said it was a very stable airplane. He enjoyed flying it. However, he did not like flying directly into a storm, especially Hurricanes.) He later flew into Typhoons for VJ-1
flying the PB4Y-2 to chart the direction of the storm.
He also flew the following planes: SB2C Helldiver, PB4Y, P2V-5J, and hellocopters (H2S.
Sincerely, Steve 11/07/2007 @ 20:25 [ref: 18448] |
