Richard (Dick) Showers Kingston, NY | Went to LN-16a SIDS school in spring 1967 at Offutt, then to Yokota...5 months later, Dec 1967 we were sent to Kadena. The SIDS shop was made up of (my AFSC) auto-pilot, Doppler, and Hound Dog people. (SIDS = Stellar Inertial Doppler System) Worked on 62-4131, 62-4132, 62-4134, 62-4135, 62-4138, and 62-4139. Left Kadena July 1971, and retired as E-8 in 1984 from Griffiss. (22.5 years) Then was a part time postal clerk for 22.5 years, and now done working. Living in my home town , Kingston NY, and still married to Linda since 1963. Two teen granddaughters 18 and almost 14, my daughter Susan's girls. Son Tom is still single. A lot of fine memories from our best tour. AIM HIGH. 10/04/2015 @ 14:44 [ref: 69264] |
Wayne Deaton Algoma, MS | Had 174 msn, all but 2/3 were Burning Candies...71-72 and 75-79...lots of great memories...feels so great to have served with such an elite group of people , and to those that kept us in the air...absolutely the best. 12/02/2014 @ 17:14 [ref: 68803] |

Thomas Lanier Byron, GA | I was in Okinawa from Sept. 1969 until Feb. 1972 I was A crew chief on 132. Spent many hours getting her ready to fly again. 11/28/2014 @ 15:06 [ref: 68789] |
Randolph Seitter Southampton, PA | First time on this site. Interesting seeing some of the comments from guys that did the same thing. I was stationed at Kadena from 73-75 and flew 69 Apple missions in the GOT. Including the fall of Saigon. Been reconnecting with some from those days (only did four years.) 06/07/2014 @ 15:40 [ref: 68501] |
Virgil Baton Rouge, LA | I flew 58 missions as a "14 op" out of Kadena in '71 - '72. I recognize most of the tail numbers in the photos. Those were interesting days. My "day job" was in scheduling, so I had to try to round up a crew for every mission. Since phones we rare on Okinawa, everyone who lived off base had to have a map to their house. Finding them was a real adventure. By the way, the 6990th flew more man-hours than any other unit in the Air Force in those days. A Back-end crew of 28, flying 18 hour two-a-day missions really adds up fast. Looking back, a an old man now, I have to say those were interesting times. 11/12/2013 @ 08:16 [ref: 68162] |

j h , FL | The RC-135 was not a transport aircraft. It was a surveillance platform. 04/09/2013 @ 08:41 [ref: 67723] |
Bill Jones , KY | I was a Korean linguist stationed with the 6990th at Kadena AB from 1972 - 74. Lots of fond memories of the folks I served with and still keep in touch with several. I remember the "Hogs" as being loud and having the unique ability to seemingly have the heat and a/c on at the same time. Loved the meals served by the flight line kitchen?!? 11/25/2011 @ 04:18 [ref: 50658] |
