The C-29A aircraft and Automatic Fight Inspection System (AFIS) was (at the time) was the most advanced inspection system flying. Using the first Laser Inertial, multi-lateration TACAN, LASER altimeter and percision barometric altimeter for aircraft and AFIS positioning. Combine that with the most advanced compter systems (ADADS) and fully integrated TACAN, well designed human-factors operators console and equipment rack this was truely an engineering marval! The UASF was fortunate to have Sierra and BAe as the systems supplier.

1990, Maj. Steven W. Brown named winner of Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) Tests and Evaluation award for 1989. Major Brown was recognized for his leadership and management efforts as team director of the C-29A Flight Inspection Aircraft program from Jan 1 to Dec 31 1989. The group was composed of ten representatives from British Aerospace Corp., the Federal Aviation Administration, AFSC and Military Airlift Command. The development effort required more than 90 C-29A test flights and the creation of a 500-page flight manual by Major Brown.

I flew in the C-140A and C-29A for the 1866 and the 1467. I was in Desert Shield and Storm with the C-29 and it preformed pretty well for the conditions. It a great time in my career.

This aircraft took delivery in 1990, replacing the C-140A Jetstar. They were assigned to the 1467th Facility Checking Squadron(formerly the 1866 FCS) at Scott AFB, IL. They were used in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. They are flown by USAF crews for the FAA's Flight Inspection mission out of Oklahoma City, OK. I've got some information and photos that I'll be adding in the near future.
