Wayne Mushrush , AK | Anyone interested in a variety of bush aviation would probably enjoy visiting Talkeetna Alaska. In Talkeetna you'll find more bush planes per capita than anywhere on the planet. Many Cessna 185s, most equipped with Fluidyne wheel skis fly Denali for climber drop offs at basecamp and other glaciers and snow fields, and glacier landings for tourists. 185s are also used to shuttle rafters and their gear to the headwaters of the Talkeetna and Tokositna Rivers, landing on short gravel strips. There are also a few float planes around. Other common aircraft in Talkeetna: Supercubs, Mauls, Taylorcrafts, Beavers, Turbine Otters, Aeronica Sedans, and Cessna 206s. The dominant aircraft in Talkeetna are 185s and Supercubs. In my travels I've never seen anything quite like Talkeetna in the summertime. It's an edge of the wilderness Alaskan town with a diverse group of adventurers and tourists and many locals who are incredibly talented. 03/06/2007 @ 12:51 [ref: 15797] |

Aird Flavelle Abbotsford, BC | The C-185 on floats on the ice isn't at all unusual in the north country. In the fall, the float equiped aeroplanes are flown "south" to a main base where they land on grass or ice. Then they can be fitted with skis for the winter season.
The opposite happens in the spring, when the ski-equiped aircraft are flown south where they land on grass to have their floats re-installed. 10/05/2002 @ 00:48 [ref: 5817] |
