Ken Vessels PORT ST LUCIE, FL | You'll notice that the Pensacola Bird Dog has SVN markings vs U.S. We were out on Midway's flight deck on the second day of Saigon's evacuation, when this little 2-seater buzzed our ship & dropped a weighted note onto the flight deck. Turns out the pilot had loaded his entire family into this tiny bird and headed out to sea on a one-way trip.
Our deck was crowded with SVN Hueys and there was no room for him to land. Randy C. & I grabbed our flight gear and hopped onto the plane guard helo. Then the spectacle began as a number of just-landed Hueys were shoved over the fantail into the deep blue sea to make room for our desperate family. We chased the little bird as the deck was cleared, and prepared for the unknown. Finally, the Cessna touched down light as a mosquito, and the deck crew grabbed the wings to slow it down: Another family saved !! 03/01/2007 @ 11:45 [ref: 15718] |

Ken Hinks Canton, MI | Concerning the nick name "TWA" for the 19th TASS O-1 Bird Dog operation at Bien Hoa RVN: I belong to a Forward Air Controller(FAC)association and this "TWA" sign has been a topic off and on for a long time. All of us that were based at Bien Hoa remember seeing the "TWA" sign on the 19th TASS hangar (or old tower in front of hangar) but no one has a picture of it. If anyone out there has a picture of the sign PLEASE send it to me via email or some other method. I will be very grateful, as will all of my FAC association buddies.
Cheers,
