Tom Armstrong Pensacola, FL | I am trying to find information about a Navy Day Air race in 1924 from Hampton Roads to Baltimore that my GRandfather won in a CS-1 seaplane from Torpedo and Bombing Squadron No. 1. I have a very large trophy cup called the Kelley cup for his win. He was Lt. Thomas A. Gray with a winning time of 1 hour and 32 minutes. The trophy inscription is CS-1, not SC-1, so I assume it was in one of the original prototype examples actually made by Curtiss. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it or if the Baltimore newspaper might have documented the event. He won the cup the first year of the event, then it was cancelled, so it has only the one winner and has been in the family all this time. I am his name-sake and grandson. He died some time ago and is interred in Barrancas cemetery on Pensacola NAS. 03/26/2002 @ 15:45 [ref: 4592] |
