In 1948 the USAAF dropped the Attack designation from its aircraft identification system. Those few remaining "A" designated aircraft were either changed to "F" for fighter, "B" for bomber (e.g. the A-20 became the B-20, the A-26 became the B-26, the A-24 became the F-24, et.al).

The subject: F-24
The F-24 is actually an A-24 Duantless which
was used by the army and navy as a dive
bomber and not a fighter. The Navy designated
the SBD Duantless.
