E.H. Bud Clements Carson City, NV | I have a Shellback certificate that has me on 131617 going to Sydney on 23 MARCH 1963. Some of the bunos that I remember are 131600,604,611,609. There was a 573, 574, 577 but I don't remember if those were 128 or 131 series (131 I think). The two R5s that we had were 850 and 391. I have several thousand hours as radioman on all those old birds.
I arrived in VR21 as a new AT3 and left as AT1. I retired in 82 as an even-numbered Chief. 03/30/2010 @ 12:57 [ref: 25950] |

E. H. \"Bud\" Clements Carson City, NV | I was a crew radioman on 128427 When ADM Felt was CinCPac and CDR Fog was the PPC. This was in the 59-62 era. As I remember 128585 was never a vipper, only 128424 and that was CinCPacFlt's aiarcraft. I made lots of long and good trips and ADM Felt often came forward to the crews area and spoke with us. WE had an R5 vipper which I think ws 90391 which I also crewed on a radioman. 03/30/2010 @ 12:43 [ref: 25948] |
Ed Randolph Orange Park, FL | In response to the question about C118, Buno 128428. Yes, it was a VIP, and it did belong to VR-21 in the early 60s. I arrived at Barbers Point and VR-21,in late 1863, and that aircraft, and another VIP, 128424 were there then. They were the only two 128 series C118s in the squadron at that time, as all of the others were 131 series aircraft. If I remember correctly, 128428 was Admiral Felts aircraft.
I only flew in aircraft 438 one time, and that was to pick it up from overhaul in Dothan, Alabama, and ferry it back to Barbers Point. 12/29/2009 @ 16:33 [ref: 25488] |
Charles Filip Needville & Shiner, TX | R6D-1 131585 is currently being moved piece by piece from Victoria, Texas to Cimarron Field, Oklahoma by new owner Mark Howard. He wants all the backround info on this particular plane for His museum. Foward to Me anything of interest. On Oct 2, 1958, We landed with #2 engine on fire, does anyone recall this incident? Pictures would be worth a million. In fact ANY picture of 585 would be a great find. My souvenier from this project is one of the emergency hatches. We had 60 passengers on board. Other crew members as best I remember, Plane Cmdr Harney, 1st radio Ludwig, 1st orderly Pruneda, 2nd radio Me. I will be at the '09 VR-21 reunion in Pensacola. 03/31/2009 @ 10:15 [ref: 24052] |
Charles Filip Needville & Shiner, TX | More Info for Tor Welch...I flew as a Radioman in VR-21 1958-59 and 427 & 428 were VIP planes during my time. I flew with Admiral Stump and later Adm Felt. Uploaded a pic of 428 in Singapore. 03/31/2009 @ 09:27 [ref: 24050] |
Bud Ralston , CA | Sorry about the BUNO confusion. Most of the C-118's I flew had bureau numbers that began with 131... The VC-118's in VR-21 did begin with 128. They were 128424, 128427, and 128428. 01/26/2009 @ 08:46 [ref: 23555] |
Bud Ralston Aptos, CA | For Tor Welch:
I was a navigator in VR-21 from 1966-1969. The squadron was named Fleet Tactical Support Squadron Twenty One until it changed in 1968 to Fleet Logisitics Support Squadron Twenty One. Bureau Number 131428 was a VIP configured C-118 (VC-118) one of three assigned to VR-21. 131424 was for CINCPACFLT, 131427 was for CINCPAC - each had permanent VIP crews assigned. 131428 was used for VIP missions for Navy 3 star admirals as needed. I was on the flight crew for 131428 for a number of VIP WESTPAC missions. 01/25/2009 @ 16:58 [ref: 23551] |
D.P.Lewis Clovis, CA | Served as First Loadmaster/Oderly, flight crewmember VR-21, Barbers Point, Hawaii 1963 to 1965. We did have a VIP R6D plane for Adm. I say this because our crew brought it back to Barbers Point from Atsugi, Japan. I can't remember why, It's been to many years. 01/19/2009 @ 11:47 [ref: 23514] |
W A KITCHEN ADR 3 Rockville, VA | Served as Line TroubleShooter when not on flight operations and First Mech/Jump Seat Flight Crewmember when flying. Spent 27 months in VR-21 at Barbers Point, Hawaii 1965 till release from active duty in 1967.
