Frerd Parker Jr. Indianola, IA | I served in VAP-61 from Feb. 1969 to Mar. 1971. I was a storekeeper working for AKC Steven Poppish. I had several occasions to catch a hop on one of the birds while on detachment. I was terrified throughout the flights. But, the old girls brought me home every time. My favorite pilot was Bill Pyle. I flew with LT. Carson once! What a thrill! I haven't had much contact with Vappers and would like to hear from you. We're all getting older, so don't wait! 02/20/2014 @ 03:21 [ref: 68358] |

Peter Hart Bishop, CA | Was ATN3 with VAP 61 12/65 to 7/67, Agana, Cubi, and one shipboard det on Kitty Hawk, transferred to VA 125 rag and then VA 144 after VAP 61, got out 6/68. AT1 Bill Cook, ATC Chuck Lemay, LT Hite are supervisors I remember. Anyone know whereabouts of Wayne Ehlers?
Did maintenance on avionics (ARC 1, ARC 27, ECM, etc.) Recall ARC 1 and 27 and ECM equip took heavy beating, needed R & R often. Couple of birds had to go back to Alameda for complete rewiring because of arcing in main busses in radio compt ("hell hole"). Big achievement was design of audio shunt for PCM device that was interfering with ICS audio - still proud of that one. One honking aircraft, though! Anyone remember CDR Grady's wavetop sorties from Subic? 08/01/2001 @ 07:37 [ref: 2799] |
