Its just too damn bad, this fighter was the main aerial power house of the fleet till; you know the Hornet showed up. It may be a multirole, but the Hornet lacks the speed that the Tomcat has, not too mention the super long range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. The Navy should have kept the Tomcat-having it serve alongside the Prowler and the Hornet; and there ya go, three roles on one carrier.

Grumman got a very bad deal. The F14-D was a much better plane than the F/A18- Hornet. Who knows what it could have been by now spring, 2008. There was a time when every plane on a carrier was a GRUMMAN. So now Grumman is gone, almost, part of Northop. What a loss for the NAVY. The F/A18 E/F. couldn"t hold a candle to the F-22A Raptor far inferior, not even in the ball game. but than neither would the F-14D, but it would have been a much better plane for the NAVY. Someone in high places was paid off are McDonnel=Douglas would never have got the contract. Enough said, the rest is HISTORY. Thank You, this my opinion.

To ???, Are you nuts. Do looks matter in a plane as long as it performs? The F-18 takes about 25% of the maintenance of the F-14. The 14 was awesome, but not cost effective enough for today's military. Boeing & MD merged after they lost out on the JSF in Dec 1996. Boeing had nothing to do with the F-15 development.

The F-14D looks incredible to me, even if its maintenance costs were more than three times higher than the Super \'Bug\'-s. The F-14D avionic was quite satisfying especially in the MIddle-East cnflicts( I mean here the ability of using laser guided bombs), and its modernized radar, the APG-71, a deadly \"tool\". This bird is a true beauty. No contest.

For all you Tomcat fans, F-14D #103 (BuNo 164350) formerly of VF-31 is now on display at the Joe Davies Heritage Air Park, in Palmdale, CA.
It arrived in good condition and has been set on a dedicated concrete pad and will bask in the desert sun.

I had the pleasure of serving with VF-31 from 1991-1995 at NAS Miramar. I was a qualified plane captain/Aviation Ordnance Airman. My aircraft was #203 Buno#164346. We were one of the first squadrons along with VF-11(Redrippers) to recieve the F-14D. I am proud to have been part of the F-14 program. I watched a documentary last night on "The Final Farewell of The F-14". I was deeply saddened that something that was such a strong part of our Navy would be retired. I feel that the life of the F-14 is being cut short. They are and will always remain "Air Superiority". There is nothing wrong with them, Sure they have been around since the 1970's, but they are far from being outdated. What other fighter can carry the amount of fuel and the ordnance payload that the Tomcat can? Personally, I don't think that there is ANY foe out there that can match the ability of the Tomcat. Even though I am no longer in the service, just knowing that they are not up there screaming at mach 2 saddens me. Farewell Tomcat, you made us proud.

How could they do this? I mean, trying to replace an air supiority fighter with a multirole? What the ****! The Navy must be ubsessed with the Hornet, the Navy is even trying to replace the Prowler with it! I'm also very critical on fighter disigns, I can find quality in every fighter design, except the F-18! I mean it looks like crap! What on earth are those to uneven looking things on the sides of the cockpit?!? The only way the F-15 was made well was that Boing came along and did more work tho make sure McDonnel Dougless didn't **** it up!
