Gustavo Vargas Quito Pichincha, QC | Since 1968 until 1977 or so, I could see this Junkers JU-52 parked outside the TAO hangars, at the Aeropuerto Mariscal Sucre in Quito. It was almost intact wit the trhee original engines and the propellers. I guess Captain Christoph Drexel was among the people who participated in the restoration process. And itīs likely that he also participated as the pilot during the test flights which were carried out for three or four times over Quito until its ferry flight to the United States.
The skills of Captain Drexel were very well recognized by the aviation people in Ecuador. He also flew for a sister company: ATESA, which owned two french-made twin-engine NORATLAS as well as one or two Douglas DC-3. During a flight to Quito from another town in the jungle, his NORATLAS suffered an Hydraulic System failure that prevented the landing gear to drop down. After many unsuccesful atempts he had to land without wheels at Quito Airport with no injuries for the crew nor the passengers, although the underfuselage stayed unserviceable, and the airplane was finally parked outdoors close to the Junkers Ju-52.
Captain Drexel died in a crash in the Andes mountains in 1986 along with Minister of Education of Ecuador, who was the only passenger onboard. His son, Thomas Drexel, is now a captain in a Boeing 767 that flies for LAN Ecuador.
If you have additional information about this JU-52, please let us know. Itīs a historical piece both for Germany and Ecuador.
Regards

BRUCE CHUBER SAN ANTONIO, TX | I MET AND WORKED WITH CHRISTOF DREXEL IN ECUADOR DURING THE YEARS OF 1959-1967. I WAS A CESSNA INTERNATIONAL REGIONALS SALES MANAGER AT THAT TIME. I NAMED CHRISTOF AND HIS COMPANY TAO AS CESSNA DISTRIBUTOR FOR THE COUNTRY OF ECUADOR.
CHRISTOF HAD BEEN IN WW 11 AND WAS CAPTURED COMING OUT OF RUSSIA WHERE HE FLEW THE JU 52. HE WAS IMPRISONED IN CANADA THEN RELEASED AND WENT TO CHILE WHERE HE WORKED AS A PILOT FLYING A CESSNA 310 FOR A WEALTHY CHILEAN BUSINESS MAN.
HE LEFT CHILE AND SETTLED INSTEAD IN QUITO ECUADOR STARTING UP HIS TAO COMPANY THERE. IN 1960 HE BOUGHT MY CESSNA 182 DEMONSTRATOR AIRCRAFT AND BECAME CESSNA DISTRIBUTOR.
HE OWED TWO JU 52 AIRCRAFT, ONE OF WHICH HE CRASHED ON LANDING. HE SPENT SOME TIME IN THE HOSPITAL RECOVERING BEFORE I MET HIM. HE HAD A GERMAN MECHANIC WHO TOOK CARE OF HIS REMAINING JU 52. CHRISTOF OFFERED ME THE AIRCRAFT FOR SALE BUT I DID NOT HAVE MONEY ENOUGH TO BUY IT. EVENTUALLY HE DID SELL IT AND FLEW IT TO MIAMI FOR THE NEW OWNER TO TAKE OVER.
CHRISTOF WAS KILLED FLYING A CESSN 185 IN THE MOUNTAINS OF ECUADOR. HE FLEW A ROUTE OUT OF THE HIGHLANDS INTO THE SELVA AREA WHERE HE ATTENDED TO THE NEEDS OF AT LEAST ONE ELDERLY GEMAN WHO I BELIEVE WAS AN EX NAZI MILITARY OFFICER AND FRIEND OF HIS. I MADE ONE TRIP THERE WITH HIM AS HE DELIVERED FOOD AND NEWSPAPERS FOR HIS FRIEND.
I BELIEVE THE JU 52 NOW FLYING WITH THE LUFTHANSA MUSEUM IS THE ONE THAT HE SOLD EARLIER.
CHRISTOF WAS A GOOO MAN AND A GREAT PILOT. WE WISH HIM WELL IN HIS NEW ABODE. I BELIEVE HE HAD A SON WHO MAY STILL LIVE IN QUITO. GOD BE WITH HIM AND HIS FAMILY.
I LIVE AND STILL FLY A CESSNA AIRPLANE DOING AERO PHOTO WORK IN SAN ANTONIO. I REMEMBER CHRISTOF EVERY TIME I TAKE OFF WITH TAIL WINDS AND BLUE SKIES ALWAYS. 11/11/2013 @ 07:07 [ref: 68157] |

Hugo Panzarasa Buenos Aires/ Argentina, QC | I have an original radio transceiver flawless operation of a Junkers JU 52 made in 1937. It is a J-UG III Telefunken
I'm looking concerned.

Ken Karpinski Sr. Philadelphia, PA | I have an extra set of plans for a JU-52 and if you send me $30 via Pay Pal to Karpinski4137@Verizon.net, I'll send them to you. The wing span is around 84" and is supposed to be powered by (3) .20 two stroke engines. 09/03/2008 @ 15:49 [ref: 22605] |
Ken Karpinski Sr. Philadelphia, PA | Radio Controlled Modeler (RCM) had plans for a JU-52 using (3) .28 engines in the late 80's or early 90's. I'm going to look into that. 08/12/2008 @ 16:46 [ref: 22447] |
pinmaus , FL | the airplane in the indiana jones movie is not a Ju 52,

Diego Navarro Bettendorf, IA | The Junkers flown by Lufhansa today is the same Junkers from TAO, an Ecuadorian transportation company no longer in business. During my student life around 1970, I donated many hours of work in the restoration of the plane so it could fly back to the US. I understood that a dentist from Illinois had bought it but later sold to Lufhansa. I saw the plane took off for the first time in Quito after maybe 10 years or more of inactivity. The pilot was Christof Drexel, a German pilot co-owner of TAO. The plane at that time had BMW engines with fix pitch propellers. The landing gear was the original and had some issues with the right wheel brake. The landing was very scary as described by Christof Drexel. I have many other stories about this plane, like the arrival of this plane to Ecuador in 1955 in a box. 06/10/2007 @ 09:05 [ref: 16794] |

Andres Rodriguez Rochester, NY | I am building a radio controlled model of the JU52. It has 3 electric motors, each coontrolled independently. The nose motor will provide all the power needed to fly and the wing motors will be used for yaw control. I made the plans from 3 views and scratch built from those plans. Should have it's maiden flight in a few weeks. I will post the results when that happens 01/26/2007 @ 08:04 [ref: 15302] |
