John D. Voss , CA | In September 1941 the USN took over twenty Hudson Bombers destined for the RAF under Lend-Lease contracts. This action was taken as a result of the increasing U-Boat menace in the Atlantic. These A/C were sent to NAS Norfolk to form Patrol Sqdn 82 (VP-82). Due to the urgent need for a modern patrol bomber the time was not taken to repaint with std USN finish but retained the RAF 'sand and spinich' camoflauge scheme. The squadron soon found themselves assigned to NAS Argentia (Canada) where they carried out U-Patrols over the North Atlantic sinking their first victims in March of 42. As more modern patrol A/C became available remaining PBO's (12 A/C) were sent to NAS Jacksonville for training roles. It would be interesting to know if they were re-painted in USN colors after assignment to NAS JAX. 03/29/2006 @ 07:36 [ref: 12964] |
