My Father, M/Sgt.G.W.Hanson, was a crew chief/engineer for one of the first B-26 Squadrons, namely the 70thBS/38thBG. The 70th and 69th had a total of 25 planes which they flew from Dayton to Sacramento and in June '42 on to Hawaii. The first twin engine planes to fly the 2300miles in 13hrs. They were in Hawaii at the time of the Battle of Midway, in which 4 planes of the 69th took part, loosing 2., From there it was on to Fiji and Guadalcanal from which the 2 Squadrons operated for nearly a year with no supplies, no spare parts, barb wire and bamboo for support. For 7 weeks the 70th flew multiple times a day to bomb the major bases at Munda, 1200 miles over open water, only loosing one plane to weather and one to anti-aircraft. The B-26 was too fast for the Japanese fighters. But it was not Dad's favorite aircraft. "It killed too many people" he once said. Only years later did I learn he was speaking of his friends. He rotated back to the States in Oct.43.
