USS MANILA BAY (CVE 61)
No doubt it was taken en route from San Diego to Pearl Harbor, between August 24-31, 1944, as one can clearly identify the 14 PBJ-1D's of Marine Bombing Squadron VMB 611. The photograph also answers the question you have posted: were there any other aircraft aboard MANILA
BAY, besides the PBJ's? The answer is "Yes," conclusively, as the picture shows there were, at least, three JM-1's. I am sure you will enjoy seeing this photo.

william stavey Brodheadsville, PA | In 1946, my father, William A. Stavey, amm 1c USN, was stationed at Agana Bay Naval Air Station. He was a member of a crew on 5/16/46 that crashed in the ocean two miles of the air station due to a run away prop. They were picked up ny Guam fishermen 07/27/2010 @ 16:32 [ref: 28408] |
Rich Chabot York, PA | My father flew the modified B-26 (JM1) as a member of Navy VJ17 in the Pacific during WWII. His plane number was H-4. A number of JM's were utilized for target towing as well as photo services. He recently informed me their planes were painted all yellow. He was stationed on Majuro, Eniwetok, Guam, Pelelui, Ulithi, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Appreciate any information on Navy JM1 in the Pacific. 12/30/2008 @ 03:05 [ref: 23376] |

george rossbach maplewood, MN | I was chief mechanic on a Jm-1 from jan 44 to the end of the war. with the aid of bombbay tanks we flew our nine jms to hawaii in twelve hours we left those planes and picked up others in guadalcanal. I spent many hours in the air with those planes. the biggest emergency we had was loss of an engine 150 miles from the canal got home on one no sweat Finished my navy career still in jm-1s in san diego when the war ended. we did succeed in knocking a few gooney birds out of the at midway 03/03/2008 @ 16:31 [ref: 19848] |
Dave Fish Camarillo, CA | In August 1944, the Escort Carrier USS MANILA BAY departed San Diego for Pearl Harbor. On board her deck were 14 PBJs of Marine Bombing Squadron VMB-611. I recently discovered that there is a strong possibility that one or more JM-1's were also on board for that voyage. I am looking for any information to confirm that any JM-1 aircraft was indeed aboard the MANILA BAY.

Rick Atterberg , IA | In reading about Martin JM-1 Marauders, I noticed a comment made by a John D. Voss, of CA., on 3-26-2006. He wrote about a number of AT-23Bs that were converted to high speed target tows. I am curious as to whether or not he flew any of those planes, and if so, was that during January of 1944, as a member of Utility Squadron Seven, at NAS San Diego? My reason for asking is that I'm researching a log book that had belonged to Lt. Melvin E. Fox, who was stationed with VJ-7 at San Diego from October 1943 to November 1944, before being transferred to VPB 100 at Kanehoe Bay, HI. in December 1944. On four occasions during January 1944, Lt. Fox flew as copilot with a "Voss", on target tows, in JM-1s, serial numbered 66698, 66699, & 66751. If John D. Voss is still out there, please reply! 02/24/2007 @ 08:29 [ref: 15652] |
John D.Voss , CA | The Navy acquired 226 excess USAAF AT-23B trainers and converted them into high speed target tugs for the USN & USMC. They were tyically assigned to VJ and VMJ squadrons stateside as well as in the Pacific theater. The AT-23B was a modification of the B-26C Marauder and were assigned the following BuNos: 6695-66795 & 75183-7507. Following the conclusion of WWII the JM Maruder was soon replaced by the Douglas JD-1 Invader. 03/26/2006 @ 07:57 [ref: 12926] |
