Charles N. Hill Milford, OH | The Martin M-130, known as Hawaii Clipper, has the unhappy distiction of being the first airliner ever hi-jacked while on a regularly scheduled flight (or "Trip" as Pan American called them).
Please take a few moments to check out my website, www.hawaiiclipper.com, for an intro to this undisclosed air tragedy and to the book, Fix on the Rising Sun, which tells the entire sad story.
In answer to your question, "why have we never heard of this before," I can only reply that, according to what one of the crew told his father before taking off on Trip 229, "what we are going to do is very dangerous. I may not come back. If I don't, take care of my three girls." There were several "missions" associated with Trip 229, not the least of which was to carry the "makings" for a Chinese Air Force air-superiority squadron (using Curtis Hawk 75A's), three very sensitive years before the AVG took to the air over Kunming (in Curtis P-40's). For this alone, the sense of political tension still exists in Washington circles.
