Aug. 1942, off Crabmeadow Beach. L.I., I watched as (Phil Gilmer?) ran into trouble, engine cut out as he was just over our beach house. He headed out over the beach and over the water (L.I. Sound) then bailed out. His P-47 hung there in the air for a while, then nosed over and screamed staight down into the sound. I never saw smoke and always wondered what caused the failure. Phil(?) floated eastward and eventually landed in Smithtown Bay where he was picked up by fishermen. Late that day and the next day boats from the west came down and searched for the plane, but in the wrong places (I had a visual bearing to the crash site), but don't think they found it
