Republic YF-84J 'Thunderflash'
|
Raymond L. Puffer, Ph.D. Edwards AFB, CA | I'm sorry, but the YF-84J was not the Thunderflash. The T-flash was designated the RF-84F. The -J model was an experimental jet fitted with the GE XJ73 engine. It looked pretty much like a standard F-84F except for a slightly deeper fuselage and a large oval intake with a lip.

Earl Berlin, Jr San Antonio, TX | While doing some research at the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB, AL, I ran across some material related to the testing of the YF-84J. Test pilots found it to be a great performer, outclassing its rivals and generally receiving very good reviews. Its only problem, had it gone into production, would likely have been the General Electric J73 engine, which made initial service of the F-86H difficult. Those engine problems were finally ironed out, but by the time that happened the airplane was pretty much on its way out of the active duty units and on its way to the Air National Guard.
