I worked on the VH-34s at Dussa , from 1966 to 1967 . Col. Lovett was the, airfield commander , Capt. Jimmy Underwood was rotary wing commander . I often think back on those great days at Davison Army Airfield and all the great guys I worked with . Does anyone know what happened to those 4 helicopters ? Please drop a e-mail if you have any info. I would greatly appreciate it .

Thank You,

This is the same Helicopter that was Vice President Hubert H. Humprey's in Minnesota. I was in the Vice Presidential flight detachment from 1966-1968 when I retired. We had two of these VCH-34A's.

Jonathan, you are correct about the time frame of the retirement of the VH-34. However, President Ford did fly in Army One. When the transition to the VH-3 happened the Army still supported them. My father worked at Davidson Army Airfield at Ft. Belvoir VA from 1977 to 1979. He said the mission of flying the president around was given to the Marines just before he got there. He thinks it happened somewhere around '76 or early '77.
President Ford was probably the only president that flew in both Army One and Marine One.

I don't think Gerald Ford ever used "Army One," as it is sometimes known.
I do know that it was used by both Eisenhower and Kennedy. (JFK used it during a visit to Nashville in May of 1963.) "Army One" was supposedly retired soon after JFK's assassination, and the CH-34 fleet was grounded years before Ford became president.
Ford most like flew aboard "Marine One," a Sikorsky H-3 Sea King, which is still in use today.

This exact model displayed at the Army Aviation museum was the presidential transport for President Gerald Ford.
