Seth Cook , HI | I also was crew chief on 66-14433. I worked on it from 2001-2005 at Kirtland AFB. At the time, it was nicknamed "the King". It's currently on permanent display at Kirtland AFB NM. I would love to know more of the previous history on it, if it ever went overseas etc. 08/06/2015 @ 14:27 [ref: 69198] |
glenn davis , MN | The 6514 Test SQ Hill AFB Utah had 2 HH-53C for the MAR mission, 68-10354 but was lost in a hard landing and fire Oct 1986 crew ok and 67-14993 later a pave low. Swithed to 2 NCH-53A. 05/14/2011 @ 12:57 [ref: 38004] |
Ben Bell Ogden, UT | Funny stuff. I worked on -4433 (with the sponson struts) as a crewchief down in Hurlburt. Also stationed in the 6514th in the 80's and 90's. Small world, isn't it? 03/31/2009 @ 09:39 [ref: 24051] |
CR , WI | In the early 90's I was with the 6514 Test Squadron at Hill. We had 2 H-53's. I dont have the tail numbers, but they were eventually sent to a facility to be upgraded for special ops duty. I recall that the Air Force got these two from the bone yard in Arizona. They were ex-marine from Vietnam. At Hill, they did not have the external tanks or a refueling probe. Just a winch and no back door to catch AQM-34's. 03/21/2009 @ 23:06 [ref: 23990] |
James Vaughn Riggins, ID | I was temporary crew chief on 66-14433 for a few weeks in the late 70's at Hill AFB Utah 6514th test squadron while it was tested for its night capabilities over snow covered mountains. It was a truly amazing aircraft, also one of the ugliest. 10/21/2008 @ 21:03 [ref: 22903] |
Joel Happeny , FL | The YHH-53H was the prototype "Pave Low" aircraft. There was only one built, tail no. 66-14433. It was eventually modified to the MH-53J configuration. It was retired from the USAF inventory in 2007 and is currently on display at Kirtland AFB, NM. It was also the first H-53 in the world to pass the 10,000 flight hour milestone. 07/22/2008 @ 02:54 [ref: 22207] |
