| O Kudrna GySgt USMC Burr Ridge, IL | The last corsair flying in US military service, was with AES-12 In Gqantico VA. until 1957. The most unusual characteristic of these squadron's Corsairs was that they were painted in the gray and white paint scheme adopted by the navy in 1956. The AU-1 (F4U-6) was designed especially for ground support with a single stage supercharger. It had the broad lower cowling like the F4U-5 but the dual air intake scoops were blocked off. The F4U-7 which was made for the French was a different airplane. It had the front end of a F4U-4 with the back end from fuel tank aft of a F4U-5. These airplanes were never flown by the US, but did see service in Vietnam (allong with the Grumman F8F Bearcat) before the US entry into its own conflict in the area. The only WWII era aircraft to see action in Vietnam with US forces was the A-26 (B-26)Invader and the AD (A-1) Skyraider. However, F4U-7s built specifically for France, and some US-surplus AU-1s did serve with French forces in Indochina (Vietnam) in the early-mid 1950s. | Ricky Dempsey Alba, TX | Did the Au-1 corsair serve in vietnam? I had a cusin well a few of them in nam and we talk about the hueys and the jets and one of them was in the navy. I told him my favorit was the fu4 corsair. It shock me when he said they ware called AU-1s in nam. so my friends stepdad was in nam i ask him have you send a corsair his reponse was the AU-1. so I assume they did serve in nam but no records and the historians said no but the brave men who serve in nam sad yes and my cusin in the navy said the navy use the corsair in the 90s. 11/15/2010 @ 15:32 [ref: 33306] |
