The F-8H of the PAF were ex-USN machines, refurbished and given to the Philippines. I read somewhere that 1 was lost during acquisition training in the U.S. (plane crashed pilot survived). At that time it seemed like a good aircraft, but once in the Philippines didn't serve that long ,apparently it was made of some kind of aluminum alloy which was disintegrating in Philippine weather. What a waste.

F8H symbolized the old pride of PAF,we must bring back those honor and pride by modernizing our airforce.

F-8h is the best fighter in 60 to 80's....the philippine acquired that aircraft during regime of marcos...we are the best armforces in southeast asia before.....but now we are weakest airforce of 21's century...because of corruption in government official....we must abolish political dynasty and business monopoly..we have to set new government by federalism...and take over companies,,such..electricity,water,oil and grains...if can do that...am sure we can acquire most advance fighter plane, war ship, long range missile,submarines,...may be can take it back....sabah malaysia and spratly...am hoping that will not go back from the past of rajah suliman...bolo and spares...

According to Cecilio Arillo in his book Breakaway, on 25 February 1986 7 PAF F-8 Crusaders pilots stationed at Basa Air Base deserted to the Americans by flying their fighter jets to Clark Air Base. Was the paint scheme of these Crusaders at that time gray or camouflage?

F8 was indeed an air superiority fighter before the Phantom. I flew an F-5 before the F-8 & I felt & saw the tremendous power the F8 had over the F5. Some pilots are scared to fly the F-8 because of its unknown characteristics before it goes into a spiral spin downward but a pilot cannot miss that shuddering & left to right oscillations, like it's fighting the direction of the turn, before it will violently start to spin. One pilot unknowingly induced it to spin & survived & brag about it but; hey it was not part of the maneuver kiddo.

I heard before that marcos signed an order of a dozen F16 but instead Sotelo revised it for the 25 F8 in return for favors from vought corp. He later, became one of the opposition leaders on edsa1. Yes, corruption in the Philippines were at any level of the Government, military, & private sectors & citizens. In the Airforce, stealing airplane Gas & cash alloted for the operation & maintenance of each squadron & wing were at the highest as I witnessed them. The airforce intellegence & military police has to share in the pie or no one can steal. In Basa Air Base, an intel officer himself was caught red handed by a general, filling up his car with a Jet fuel. He end up becoming a general too, later.

In palawan, an F8 or even a helicopter are flown only 15 minutes & then siphoned its tanks of aviation gas or jet fuel & sold to local retailers. Stealing was everywhere where there's anything to steal. Then, we all blame the government for corruption. I remember one time, when I piloted a beechcraft T-34 from Basa Air Base to Villamor. I observed that my fuel gages on both tanks were 3/4 as I shut down my plane on arrival. When I restarted my plane to leave for Pampanga, my fuel gages were only indicating less than 1/4. I almost lost my engine halfway to my destination & it quit as I was taxiing back to the ramp.

F8's jet fuel was being siphoned in large amount wether it was in Palawan trying to defend the spratley islands or in Basa Air Base our home base. How do you think a superior & advanced aircraft can survive & live long among the people who fly & maintain it & at the same time stealing its fuel & parts? Who is to blame?

Good bird, short legs. Not really want the PAF wanted at the time. They were really after the F-15. But hey, beggars cant be choosers, so we ended up with the refurbed birds dug up from Monahan AFB. The range they had was not really what we needed, it was limited, but these planes were used to good effect, intercepting russian bombers intruding into philippine air space.

They were not envisioned to last beyond 10 years. They were, in effect, the first interim fighters the PAF had, in preparation for better birds 10 years after their purchase. But, shit happened. nuff said.

The F8H Crusader Fighter-jets should have continue its service for the Philippine Airforce up to this present day If not for the Corrupt People in Philippine Government and some in the PAF as well. It should have taken the place of the retired F5A Freedom Fighter-jets and maybe We could still be seeing F8H Crusaders still flying and protecting our Philippine Air Space.. Its just unfortunate our PAF have to suffer decades of Humiliation, the lowest morale, and nothing to show for..
