Harrison (Harry) Good Fort Myers, FL | I was attached to Service Test at Patuxent River when this aircraft was delivered there, It was wraped in pink water resistant paper when we towed it into the hangar and secured the hangar doors. To me it was an exciting day, it was an awsome looking aircraft, some of us called it the praying mantass 04/21/2008 @ 10:44 [ref: 20643] |
Frank Morgan , IL | I worked for Chance Vought in 1947-8 and watched the first XF7U-1 being built. It was towed thru the streets of stratford, conn. and loaded on a barge The barge took it to Patuxent River,MD. Naval Air Station for testing. I was present there for its maiden flight in the fall of 1948. I believe Bill Millar was the test pilot. 08/02/2007 @ 13:12 [ref: 17423] |
William Rutherford , CA | The F7U design was the result of captured German documents. The German tests during WWII indicated that a tailless delta wing had some advantages over a conventional a/c design because of reduced drag and weight. Obviously the ME 163 was an example of this thinking. 03/17/2001 @ 15:12 [ref: 1840] |
