I am reading Op/Jb (operation james bond) whereupon the author Christpher Creighton claims to be the original james bond. In his book he claims that he was picked up in a german captured lysander with open cockpits! Has anyone heard of such a model. He said it was a Mk 1

The Lysanders of 161 Squadron RAF were based at Tempsford Airfield in Bedfordshire from 1942 - 1945. It is only since 1998 (when many records were released from the Official Secrets List) that the exploits of the Lysander missions have become more fully known. If you\'d like to visit www.tempsford.20m.com you\'ll see the activities of the \"moon\" squadrons based at Tempsford.

On August 25, 1944, I was a radio operator on a 15th AF B-17 that was dispatched from our base at Amendola, Italy, to pick up four officers who were returning from a rest camp near Crotone, Italy. We had to land our stripped B-17 on a short dirt runway surrounded by trees. Near the runway a Westland Lysander lay with one wingtip on the ground, having smashed its landing gear in landing. We figured that some months earlier it had delivered, or was sent to pick up
an agent in the "secret" war. In any case, we made a clean landing and takeoff.

I vaguely remember seeing the Lysander at an airshow at Point Magu in the mid 70's. I think my dad has commented about them from his childhood in Southamton England in the 1940's.

Probably an aircraft ahead of it's time in terms of STOL ocapability.

Airfield now back to agriculture, but has The Barn, where a number of dedications are left.

I am an author of novels based around WW2. The one out next March, Dying Day is set during the Berlin airlift but has a flashback to a Lysander landing in France. The publishers have put the Lizzie on the cover. It's a great design (and nothing to do with me - I can't take any credit). I will post it on my site www.robert-ryan.net sometime soon.

Just today, while cleaning the basement, I found a damaged Lysander model assembled many years ago by my son.I found this site while searching the net for pictures showing the location of the antenna mast. The model is larger than 1/72 but smaller than 1/28. and has the markings L480L and IIG(roundel)E on the fuselage. I wonder if this refers to a real plane or...? The wings are being mounted today, and I will send pics when done to my son now living on the West Coast. These WW2 warriors are great!

I have been an ardent fan of the Lysander ever since building a KeilKraft model at about the age of eight back in WW11 days. A couple of years ago I started collecting plans, kits (including the one I built all those years ago, which is still produced) and pictures with the idea of building a quarter scale model (although that may just be a pipe dream) but one part of the plane I cant seem to get details of is the jack which actuates the moveable tailplane (pictures, plans or drawings}. If any one can help I would be more than pleased. At the time of this renewed interest I took myself off to (cant think of the name off hand, it gets like that at my age) one of our living aircraft museums about 30 miles north of London where I was able to watch it fly take photos and video it, but was not able to find out the secretes of the tailplane.

If you want good detailed drawings of a \"Lizzie\" look out for a Russian site that comes up during a \"Westland Lysander\" internet search. I don\'t understand the writing but the drawings(zipped) are excellent fo reference. I chose California because I had to pick something.
