Richard L. Benner, Jr. High Ridge, MO | I was an ADJ jet mechanic and plane captain in the Navy between 1966 thru 1969. I was trained in VA-125 (Now VFA-125) in Lemoore, California at NAS Lemoore. I transfered to VA-212 in 1966 and was there until I was discharged in July 1969. I made 2 Westpac cruises to Viet Nam in 1967 and 1968. I was first introduced to the A4C at Lemoore for training. Our VA-212 had A4D-A4E-TA4E and A4F the time I was aboard. I will never forget the first time I was introduced to the Tinker Toys. First, she was a DOUGLAS A4. I was told that I was being given a 1/4 of a million dollar airplane ($250,000),and I was responsible for it. We drop bombs worth more then that now. They were great planes. I loved it when they would get into training dog fights with the F-4's. They would beat the pants off of them in tight fighting, but if they ever tried to run away, the F-4 would eat them up. I have some traps on CVA-31 U.S.S BonHomme Richard in the back seat of the TA4E. Great sturdy aircraft. I have pictures of some coming back from over the jungles of Viet Nam , after taking Sam and ACK ACK. My A/C as plane Captain made it all the way back to the BonHomme Richard and never flew again. However she got her pilot back , safe and sound.
I loved my time in the Navy and the time I spent with the A4 aircraft.
