Forgot to mention that I also worked de-converted '61 E models at LRAFB, AR.

Have other photos I've collected.

March 1991 - 1993, contractor for LSSI(Lockheed Support Systems Inc.) to 6514th at Hill AFB UT. DC-130A, 57-0461, came back to life again...

All cargo area stations (MCGS Operators,systems racks and LCOs) were palletized for roll-on, roll-off configurations for multi-functional use. Other contractors from Ryan and Sperry made it work.

It had wing bladder tanks instead of tank in cargo hold.

Highlights of that contract:

Teledyne-Ryan anniversary celebration at their plant in San Diego. They took down the security fence alongside a taxiway, so 0461 could park in their 'yard' for 3 days.

AEGIS Destroyer/Cruiser qualifications on the US east coast, Puerto Rico and Hawaii.

In Hawaii,0461 became the cover photo for AIRMEN's magazine, June 1991 (Though it was described a DC-130H.) The photos were taken from NC-130H 65-0979 (Formerly DC-130H 'til 1977.) I'll try upload 2 photos.

To Mike Stewart;
Do you know how to contact BJ Fielding?
I was an ATRT (Automatic Tracking System Technician) on the MCGS from 68 thru 74.
Before that I was on ground crew for the MSQ-2X and MSQ-70 (Ground Tracking Recovery systems) prior to being assigned to the MCGS system.
Flew with Engineer Otis Powell 69/69 out of Bien Hoa. Also flew from Utapao from 70 - 74. Flew out of Osan from 70 -74 when not in SEA

Never crewed the D Model. But crewed A models in Naha 68-69. Mostly on 476 with Charlie Agar. Also served on 517 with Neil Reynolds. Remember 520 and 523 being there. Those were good times. Herky Hill at CRB. Ubon with Blind Bat.

I crewed the A-model with Jim Motes in the 100th SRW down at Davis-Monthan in the early 70's. Ole 0527 sticks in my mind, and only Motes could love an A-model. The A's were a real piece of work, the model of T-56 engine used had a high pressure oil system that leaked almost as bad as the recip engines. The 3 blade aeroproducts propellers were more efficient than the more common 4 blade type at lower altitude, but they set up a harmonic in the aircraft that would beat you to death. A 4-5 hour flight on an "A" would feel like a 12-16 hour work day afterwards. The A was fairly short legged (no wing tanks)so we had a large fuel tank in the cargo compartment that was a pain to fuel, and the cargo compt. always smelled of JP-4. The early electrical system used was not designed to handle all the additional demands of the drone systems and we were always a couple of volts shy of what was needed. Looking back though it was a good unit, we worked exceptionally hard and partied even harder. A good time to be in the USAF.
