MiG-19 was ahead of its time, and can be seen as a forerunner to concept of jets of our time: great T/W ratio for its period, great wing, excellent rate of climb (in excess of 500 feet/sec.), three 30 NR-30 mm guns, it was clearly superior dogfighter to its peer adversary F-100.
It could outturn and beat all century fighters in dogfight and was more than a match for F-4, as MiG-19 turned far better and could climb almost as fast as F-4.
Fortunately, MiG-19 was deployed in Vietnam in modest numbers, compared to MiG-17 and MiG-21. Vietnamese were not the same class as US pilots (in general), and MiG-19 was not easy to maintain and operate properly, therefore never much in favor of Soviet-bloc air forces.
I dare to say that this was the best dogfighter of 50-ies and maybe even 60-ies, never fully appreciated by its makers and understood by its opponents.
But the concept of fast turning, fast climbing two engine fighter with great T/W ration and hard hitting 30mm gun returned after more than 25 years in MiG-29...

I love the MiG 19 Farmer - very stylish classic warplane
a logical step up from the MiG 17 - very goodlooking sleek russian fighter - Im glad the chinese copied it as the J6
they obviously knew as much as I do that this warplane rocks
also the more MiG 19's around the better - also this is a really good site.
