To the fellow from Goodyear, AZ that wanted to know which film showed the deadly saber dance footage, there were actually two films made with that crash shown. One was a Korean War movie called "The Hunters", and the other was "X-15", in which F-100's were featured as chase planes to monitor the X-15's flight path. As an aviation buff, I thought both films were very good.

The top left photo is currently an F-84, not an F-100.

I'm looking for information on the infamous Sabre dance video. I remember how it raised the hair on the back of our necks when they showed it to us in pilot training.

I want to write a magizine piece on the dance. If any of you have references or information, please contact me. Specifically, I'd like:

1. When and where the famous film was made.
2. Who the pilot was and any circumstances about him and his background.
3. Other sabre dance accidents/incidents.
4. What movies, other than "X-15", the video showed up in.
5. Technical information on the dance (i.e. angle-of-attack/power management problems issues).
Thanks,
Alan

If you want to know moer about the F-100s that are build, please check the website www.supersabre.org On this website is a database that can be search through on serial number, on Unit and Squadron number. The database currently holds 40,000 plus records and is updated regularly. Many of the serials in the database came from microfilms.
Many of the serials in the database have pictures attached to it. You can take a free tour when pressing the demo button.

In 1961 at Nellis AFB I saw an F100D do the sabre dance. The aircrft had a dart under its wing which was used for Air to air gunnery. On the take off roll, when he rotated the nose pitched straight up and thats when the dance began. It seemed like it went on for several minutes but it was short seconds until the right wing dropped and touched the ground, the nose dropped just enough for the pilot to gain some control. He flew it out of the stall, just a few feet above our heads and the tails of other F-100s on the ramp. The "shooters" setting at the end of the runway taxied back to their parking spots knowing for sure that the pilot was going to bail out when he got high enough. But they didn't know this pilot. He went on to the range and called back asking where everyone was at. He was towing the dart and ready to go to work.

The "Sabre Dance" footage was in two movies that I know of, The X-15 Story where Charles Bronson was a Chase pilot who ingested some material from the X-15 and crashed on landing. The other movie was "The Hunters" with Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner. They flew F-86's in the movie( Korea) but inserted the F-100 crash scene. Too bad we didn't have a Zero Zero seat back then.

I had seen the clip of the "Sabre Dance" within a few years of the event, and later a movie was made starring Charles Bronson (I don't think it was "Stratigic Air Command" but a similar movie of the same era maybe mid to late 60's, and in the movie Charles Bronson was the the pilot who experienced this unfortunate event which included the actual Air Force footage, so if you can find an old movie buff who remembers the name of the movie, you can probably rent it at a vedio store or buy it from one of the companies that sell old and or military movies.

To those wondering about the infamous "Sabre Dance" crash footage. The plane in question had a landing gear problem and was attempting to land on a foamed runway at Edwards AFB. Lt. Barty R. Brooks got into a high AOA unstable oscillation (The Sabre Dance) while trying to make a slow approach and was killed in the crash of F-100C 54-1907. The crash occurred 10 Jan 56. The crash was filmed by cameras set up for an unrelated test.
