Naval Air
Station Oceana will host an action-packed weekend for the entire family at the
44th Neptune Festival Air Show, September 20-22, 2002.
This years theme is "Defending
Freedom: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."
As Naval Air Station Oceana
celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the Navys Blue Angels will be the featured flight demonstration team along
with the nine-plane performance by the Canadian
Forces Snowbirds.
The award-winning air show at
Naval Air Station Oceana will present a showcase of the worlds finest aviators
such as AT&Ts F-86 flown by
Dale Snodgrass and the always popular ShockWave
Jet Truck with three jet engines.
Team Oracle national champion Sean
D. Tucker, a true aviation champion, will thrill you with his one-of-a-kind
Oracle
Challenger. He
makes the plane do things that seem impossible, like flying backwards at speeds up to 100 mph
or taking more G-forces than most
modern day fighter pilots have ever experienced.
Making its first
appearance at the Neptune Festival Air Show will be a fast-paced, loud and
powerful precision aerobatics performance by Bill Leff in his North American T-6 Texan warbird aircraft.
Leffs act captures the true essence of
flight training maneuvers taught to military pilots of the Korean Conflict era,
many of whom were trained in the Texan.
The First Lady of Aerobatics, Patty Wagstaff, flies one
of the most thrilling, low-level arobatic routines in the world today. Her
aggressive, smooth style sets the standard for performers the world over.
Dan Buchanans hang gliding show has thrilled and inspired
audiences in North American, Australia, Thailand, Canada and Mexico. Dont miss
Dans amazing night show on Friday.
Also part of the airshow lineup
will be a Canadian Forces CF-18
Hornet fighter jet air demonstration.Capt. Gary J. Schwindt has logged more than 1,100 hours of military
flying time. The CF-18 is a combat
aircraft built by McDonnell Douglas for Canada.
The show also
includes the Navy Legacy Flight
(F-4U Corsair, F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet) and a Navy Air Power
Demonstration featuring multiple F-14 Tomcats
and F/A-18 Hornets.
The annual air show at Naval Air
Station Oceana will also highlight performances by the Air Forces F-15 Eagle, F-117 Stealth Fighter, and the A-10
Thunderbolt demonstration team. The
A-10 is specifically designed to provide effective anti-armor support for
ground forces and to be deadly against tanks and other targets. The Army will
be represented by the AH-64 Apache
demonstration.
Announcing the
air show will be Frank Kingston Smith. He began announcing air shows in
1977 after working as a radio and television personality and pilot.

Reviews/Comments Mike Lynaugh mike@mikelynaugh.com Washington, District of Columbia | I have been attending airshows since 1989 and have been covering them for the media since 1997 and I can honestly say without hesitation that this airshow is the best I have ever seen. Nothing I have seen even compares to this one. The planning was spectacular, and the action never stopped. I got there at 8:45, and did not leave until 5pm, and never even got up from my seat, I couldn't I would have missed too much!
I also attended the Beach Blast 2002, and again, what a fantastic idea! Getting to hang out and talk with the Blue Angels, and the Snowbird pilots, while enjoying music, and the beach, it was great. I loved the night parachute jump, and the F-14 demo over the beach, just sitting on the beach, w/ the full moon, and an F-14 going full afterburner down the shoreline at night, this was truely a World Class event. Thank you guys.
If you would like to see some of my photos from the event, I have them located at this link:

Some samples have been posted here for you to get an idea. This show is really fantastic!

Alex Lloreda alloreda@telecorp1.com Arlington, Virginia | If you are a WWII Warbird fan, there may not be much for you, but this airshow is definitely worth going to. An extensive list of performers, in a great location, and during a great time of year. This was the first time I went, and was especially pleased by the Executive Squadron Chalet, where for an advanced reservation and fee, you get excellent seating, food and drink all day, plus many of the performers themselves hang out there too. Definitely worth the price and the drive. 09/23/2002 @ 13:51 |
Joel , Maryland | I lived near Oceana for 16+ years and almost never missed a show. As of 8-17-02 they ARE still having a show. Unlike Andrews which shrunk to one day, Oceana is still posting a 2 (actulally 2 1/3) day show For all the details, visit their website at http://www.neptuneairshow.com/home.htm You can even preorder tickets to the great seating chalets they have set up on the flightline. A definate plus in the humid and hot summer in Hampton Roads, VA. 08/17/2002 @ 01:15 |
Robert Dahler robertdahler@wanadoo.nl Utrecht, The Netherlands, Virginia | I am going to Visit The US for a week , my planning was to visit NAS Oceana Airshow and
The Patuxent River Air Expo.
The Air Expo has been canceled, does any one know if the NAS Oceana show will be canceled to,
I hope not becuase I already booked my flight
Thanks in Advance,
Robert Dahler 07/19/2002 @ 12:29 |
Tom Serrano , Pennsylvania | What can you say about this show! It is absolutely the best! It seems like anything that can fly goes up into the air. If you stay in a hotel along the beach at night, some of the jets fly along the beach line. With their afterburners going they turn to the ocean to reveal their glowing exhaust.
They also have a night show at the base.
This is one show that can't be beat! 05/14/2002 @ 10:29 |
