Saw Mr. Franklin perform in the Red Rocket Jet-Powered Waco at the CAF Midland Show. I can't understand why he'd bastardize a classic aircraft like a WACO by hanging a jet engine under it. Why an obviously good aerobatics pilot needs a silly gimmick is something I can't fathom. Maybe I'm a purist but hanging a jet engine on a WACO biplane is like pulling the Allison (or Merlin) from a P51 and trying to rebuilt the front end to hold a 4360 Double Wasp. The irony of what I perceive to be an exercise in futility is the WACO really looks ridiculous. To maintain CG, the pilot cockpit has been moved so far aft as to make it look like the pilot is almost sitting on the vertical stab. Not only is the jet bolted to the belly of the WACO, but a sharp kink had to be put in the tailpipe, probably to keep from setting the underside of the aircraft on fire. I would gladly pay to see Mr. Franklin perform his superb aerobatics in a regular aircraft; but would not cross the street to see this flying monstrosity put thru its paces.

I was an Air Force brat - I grew up going to airshows. I haven't been to many lately, perhaps because I thought I'd pretty much seen it all. WOW!!! See you next year.! Mark

I went to school with Jimmy in Lovington, New Mexico in the early 60s. He was riding an old Triumph motorcycle in those days and doing some flying. He was a classy guy back then, and comes as no suprize that he is "World Class" now. Roy Vaughn vaughn@cottonboll.com

I have seen Jim Franklin fly 3 times,1984,1992,and 2002 at OKC Airshow America. His performance is show stopping and steals the show as he gets better with each year that passes. The jet powered Waco is just out of this world and will amaze you when you see it fly for the first time.Jim Frankin is a 4 hour performer[Worth the 4 drive to see him fly,not the length of his show]!

I have seen Jim Franklin perform for years. From his Piper Aerostar as (Zar), to his awesome Waco Mystery ship with the learjet engine attached to the bottom. He is the most creative airshow performer ever.He does what few airshow acts do,(He keeps the crowd on there toes with excitment)
