| Henry Horner Henry3730@aol.xom Houston, Texas |  Saw Mr. Franklin perform in the Red Rocket Jet-Powered Waco at the CAF Midland Show. I can't understand why he'd bastardize a classic aircraft like a WACO by hanging a jet engine under it. Why an obviously good aerobatics pilot needs a silly gimmick is something I can't fathom. Maybe I'm a purist but hanging a jet engine on a WACO biplane is like pulling the Allison (or Merlin) from a P51 and trying to rebuilt the front end to hold a 4360 Double Wasp. The irony of what I perceive to be an exercise in futility is the WACO really looks ridiculous. To maintain CG, the pilot cockpit has been moved so far aft as to make it look like the pilot is almost sitting on the vertical stab. Not only is the jet bolted to the belly of the WACO, but a sharp kink had to be put in the tailpipe, probably to keep from setting the underside of the aircraft on fire. I would gladly pay to see Mr. Franklin perform his superb aerobatics in a regular aircraft; but would not cross the street to see this flying monstrosity put thru its paces. 10/09/2002 @ 13:10 |
